Ben Howard & Roller Trio - Barclaycard Mercury Music Sessions
I was lucky enough to take a pair of lucky competition winners (thanks to Lorraine at Charm Factory PR) and myself along to LSO St Luke’s to see Ben Howard alongside fellow Mercury Prize nominees Roller Trio.
Roller Trio kicked off the evening with some infectious jazz that surged and brooded in equal measure. Their new take on a style that constantly evolves was both evocative and refreshing and engaged the intimate audience within the stunning surroundings of St Luke’s Chapel. Roller Trio have a sound that is surely destined for movie soundtracks with melodies that could easily become onomatopoeic of scenes in films. Some of their songs surge with an unrelenting energy and others lull you into a place to ponder, relax or contemplate. A fantastic trio who are destined for lofty heights.
Ben Howard and his band appeared on stage and delivered mesmerising renditions of all the big hits from his album ‘Every Kingdom’. With endearing modesty Ben had the audience in the palm of his hand and was clearly enjoying his set until it got cut short, through no fault of his own, for a reason unbeknownst to the ensconced audience. After a rapturous applause and calls for an encore Ben and his band returned for one more song and left every person in the room with a feeling of immense satisfaction. Ben truly is a man at the top of his (musical) game at the moment and having been lucky enough to have seen him live before it is clear his performances are more and more polished, accomplished and quite frankly, brilliant.
